quality of aluminum 6061 rod? Empty quality of aluminum 6061 rod?

Post  rschaerer Mon Jan 04, 2010 3:50 pm

I am trying to buff 5 inch by 3/4 dia aluminum motorcycle foot pegs. I am using two 8 x 3/8 inch airwave wheels with tripoli running at 1800 rpms. My problem is that while buffing small deep marks appear at random. I buff one mark out and another will appear in a new location. Is the problem in the quality of the metal? I have buffed other parts without this occurring but this new batch of pegs all seem to have this same problem. I also experience this same problem (only worse) when I am doing a finishing buff with a sewn canton wheel using a green polishing bar. The small groves are always in the same direction of the wheel. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ron

the best thing to do is to sand them to 1200-1500 and skip the tripoli. yes, the material is the problem, and sanding it works better. after sanding, use white compound with a medium white airway buff.

try this out and let us know...
