Surface feet per minute on aluminum.
This describes the actual buffing pad speed recommended for buffing aluminum. 5000ft/min is the number to shoot for. To figure your surface ft/min, take the pad diameter, multiplied by 1/4, multipied by arbor speed.
Examples:
10" airway at 1800 rpm. 10*.25*1800=4500 surface ft/min-> this is very close to the recommended 5000ft/min. An 8" airway on an 1800 rpm buffer (which is typically used on a 3/4hp buffer) is a little too slow, at 3600 ft/min. However, being a little slow is better than being too fast. Your work will just take a little longer. Sometimes a 10" pad can be used on an 1800 rpm 3/4hp buffer, but usually it wont quite run it.
8" airway at 3600 rpm. 8*.25*3600=7200ft/min->this is too high and will cause burning of the aluminum and "molecular migration".
For a 3600 rpm bench buffer, we recommend using either a 5" or 6" square pad mounted on a pinhole adapter, as this gives a figure close to the recommended 5000ft/min.

flow lines
how do you remove the lines left from buffing
